Methodology

How every result is checked

Four data sources are merged journal by journal, then screened for fees and for what Indian institutions look for.

What “without APC” means

  • Subscription / hybrid: not open access in Scopus, SCImago or DOAJ. Publishing is free; any open-access option is optional and paid.
  • Diamond open access: DOAJ “APC: No”, or Diamond in SCImago. Free to publish and to read.

6,631 active Scopus journals that charge an APC, or have no confirmed no-fee status, are excluded. Confirm page, colour or submission fees on the journal website.

Suitability for Indian authors

Highly suitableActive in Scopus, SJR Q1/Q2, accepts English, indexed through 2024 or later.
SuitableActive and accepts English, but Q3, or Q1/Q2 with lagging coverage.
Use with cautionQ4, unranked in SJR 2025, trade journal, or no English.
AvoidDiscontinued by Scopus.

UGC discontinued the UGC-CARE list in February 2025; each university now sets its own criteria. Check your institution’s policy before submitting.

ONOS & hijacked journals

ONOS publisher marks the 30 publishers in India’s One Nation One Subscription scheme (live since 1 Jan 2025), so readers at participating institutions typically have full-text access.

Beware of cloned websites. Reach a journal through its Scopus source page or DOAJ-verified link, and match the ISSN before you submit.
